Why Every DIY Appliance Repairer Needs a Multimeter

A multimeter lets you test whether electrical components are working without having to guess. It tells you:

Whether a fuse has blown

Whether a heating element has a break

Whether a sensor is within spec

Whether there's voltage reaching a component

Understanding the Key Multimeter Settings

Continuity Mode (🔊)

Tests whether electricity can flow through a component. Beeps = continuity = circuit is complete. Silence = open circuit = component is broken.

Resistance Mode (Ω)

Measures how much a component resists electrical flow. Used for testing thermistors, which have known resistance values.

DC Voltage Mode (V⎓)

Measures DC voltage. Used for testing sensors and control board outputs.

AC Voltage Mode (V~)

Measures AC voltage. Used with extreme caution to test mains voltage at outlets or terminals.

Safety Rules

NEVER test AC mains voltage unless you are trained in electrical safety

Always unplug the appliance before testing individual components

Use continuity mode for testing fuses, heating elements, door switches, and thermostats

Most Common Tests

**Thermal fuse**: Set to continuity. Touch probes to both ends. Should beep. Silence = blown fuse.

**Heating element**: Continuity. Should beep. No beep = failed element.

**Thermistor/temperature sensor**: Resistance mode. Compare reading to spec chart.

**Door switch**: Continuity with door button pressed. Should beep. Release = silence.
